There can be no liberty unless there is economic liberty. — Margaret Thatcher

A new pledge of allegiance?

Not likely, but this quote sums up how I feel following this election. Thanks to Ghost of a flea, Kathy Shaidle, and Dr. Roy for starting this.

UPDATE: Actually, I think this quote will become a permanent part of my blog.

I am a Canadian, a free Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship God in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.

That is the final sentence from John Diefenbaker’s Bill of Rights in 1962.

Some people complain that the election was a waste of time, because it yielded another minority, and not a majority. I disagree. There isn’t a price too high, to pay for renewing our democracy. Our ability to peacefully change governments without fear of political reprisal is something we should never take for granted.

I hope the people who didn’t vote in this election will change their minds next time.
